Gorgeous nose of blackcurrants, raisin, plum, and nutmeg with undertones of violet petals.

Scarpata, named for the Niagara Escarpment, is a deeply-textured, full-bodied wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon.  The fruit for is sourced exclusively from a small, west-facing slope at the north end of the Rennie Estate Heron Pond Benchland Vineyard site.  

Flavors of blackberry, date, cocoa, cassis and cinnamon combine with ripe tannins and a lush mouthfeel to produce a gorgeous “Ripasso-style “wine.

Vinification:

Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Rennie Estate’s Heron Pond Vineyard were picked November 1st at 23.9° Brix. Following primary fermentation, skins from the “G” Assemblage (appassimento Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) were added to this wine. The resulting extended fermentation created, after pressing, a full-bodied “Ripasso style” wine of intensity and depth. The wine was transferred to French oak barrels, half of which were in first use, to undergo malolactic fermentation and age for 24 months.  Scarpata was bottled unfiltered in April 2019 with alcohol measuring 14.5%, residual sugar 1 gram per litre, titratable acidity 5.5 grams per litre and pH 3.75.

91 points — Rennie freely admits that “Cabernet Sauvignon is really tough to ripen in Ontario — in any year. You need a really good vintage and a lot of time. It softens and becomes more approachable,” he says. He calls this ripasso style of wine “Cabernet Sauvingon squared” after the wine is passed over the skins from the full appassimento style G wine below and undergoes a second fermentation. It’s aged in French oak for 24 months. Such a gorgeous nose of perfumed blackberries, kirsch, oak spices, raspberries, cherries and concentrated black currants. It has powerful notes of thick black cherries, currants and anise on the palate with rich spice notes, medium tannins and a tangy note on the long finish. Can cellar 5+ years for further integration.
