Winemaker's Notes

This, the debut vintage, is provocatively scented of blackberry, cherry syrup, cigar box and leather with spicy, savoury undertones.

“The Colleen” is creamy and concentrated, with the ample weight of ripe tannins.

A taste finds a cornucopia of flavours including cherry, raisin and other dark fruits, plus dark chocolate and oak-vanilla.

Vinification:

Cabernet Franc grapes were hand-picked November 1st from Rennie Estates’ Heron Pond Vineyard.  Grape sugar, 24.4° Brix at harvest, increased to 29° through a 68-day drying period.  Primary and full malo-lactic fermentation were followed by two years in French oak barrels, of which half were in first use.  Forty-seven cases of 750-mL bottles and eight six-bottle cases of 1.5-L “magnums” were bottled in April 2019.  “The Colleen” measures 16.5 % alcohol, 2.5 grams per Litre residual sugar, 5.2 grams per Litre titratable acidity and 3.9 pH.

Total production was 46 cases.
Less than 20 cases remain.

"...  the first 100% Cabernet Franc appassimento wine since the debut “Gaia” that was not released commercially from the 2009 vintage. 100% of the Cab Franc was dried for 68 days to 29 Brix and 16.5% abv. It was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, half of which were new barrels. The wine is named after Colleen Rennie (above), the daughter of Graham and Christine. A stunningly expressive nose already for such a big new wine with notes of wild forest berries, black cherries, savoury spices, campfire smoke, a lifted floral note, wild raspberry bramble, black currant jam, subtle herbs and eucalypt. The texture is silky smooth and luxurious with ripe tannins and a highly concentrated and complex array of raspberries, black cherries, cassis, licorice, herbs, rousing oak spices and a finish that goes and on and on. This is a very young wine that can be cellared 10-15 years. It would be interesting to watch where it can go. If drinking now, decant for two hours minimum. Bravo!"
