At Malivoire, we like to do things a little differently. The wine road less travelled is something we’ve grown accustomed to taking, knowing it can ultimately be very rewarding.

Looking back, it seems only fitting that we embraced vines originally sent to us in error, to create a new wine. The result turned out to be one of our signatures – the zesty, aromatic white variety known as Melon.

Our original, “happy accident” plantings have increased over the years and for the first time this vintage, we just might be able to supply enough of this rare wine to keep up with demand!

The fresh 2021 vintage is perfectly crafted to pair with lemon zested vegetables and chicken and is a classic match for seafood, especially East Coast oysters and fish.  This first of the season white wine is guaranteed to inspire you in the kitchen!

If you are new to this variety, and enjoy the racy, crisp attitude of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, then our Melon is one to try!  

Winemaker's Notes

For 20 years our Melon has been relished for its clean, razor-sharp edge. This new vintage does not disappoint! Aromas capture freshly cut lime, candied lemon, green apple and quince. Perked by zesty acidity, citrus and apple carry to the palate alongside a dash of lavender.

100% Melon de Bourgorne grapes.  Hand-picked October 6th, 64% from the Malivoire Estate Vineyard and 36% from the Mottiar Vineyard. Grape sugars averaged 19.7° Brix.
 
Pressed in whole grape clusters. Primary fermentation, settling and ageing were completed in a horizonal stainless steel “milk tank”, with extended lees contact. Bottled in December 2021.

Dry: 0 residual sugar.

At the time of bottling in December 2021; Alcohol measured: 12%; Residual Sugar: 0.6 grams per Litre; Titratable Acidity: 7.5 grams per litre;  pH: 3.1

Food Companions:
Chill to 7° C and pair with ceviche, white fish, oysters or other shellfish.
When to drink: Enjoy now through 2025.

For the life of me, I do not understand why more Melon de Bourgogne isn’t planted in Niagara. It’s pure summer in a glass, a clean, crisp and razor-sharp refresher that Malivoire has championed for 20 straight years from its Beamsville Bench estate vineyard. The 2021 version does not disappoint with a saline nose of lemon citrus, sharp green apple and pear. It’s tangy and crisp on the palate with lemon-lime, apple and freshening acidity on a dry, chiselled finish. Made for oysters and bright sunny days ahead.
