Plum, blackberry, milk chocolate, cedar and pine scents greet the nose.
The wine is full and firm in the mouth with flavours suggesting black cherry, raisin and other dark fruits, black bean, beetroot and vanilla.
“G” will reward ten or more years of cellaring.
“G” is a marriage of cabernet sauvignon (43.8%), cabernet franc (31.3%) and merlot (24.9%), all nurtured on Rennie Estates’ Heron Pond Vineyard. Average sugar ripeness at harvest on the 28th of October was 22.1° Brix.
After between 86 and 105 days in a specially-constructed drying chamber, the grapes achieved 28.1° Brix while losing almost a third of their weight. Free-run juice was collected into French oak barrels, 54% of which were new, for one month of primary and malolactic fermentation.
The wine remained in barrel to age for a further twenty-one months. The resulting blend was bottled in December 2016 at 15.5% alcohol, 0.5 grams per litre residual sugar, 5.9 grams per litre titratable acidity and 3.74 pH.
Total production was only 185 cases.
