What is the Beamsville Bench?
The Beamsville Bench is a designated VQA wine appellation within the Niagara Escarpment, located on a narrow plateau of land that runs along the base of the Niagara Escarpment cliff face in Ontario's wine country. The appellation spans just eight kilometres of the Niagara Escarpment landform, a limestone ridge that runs more than 1,050 kilometres through Ontario, Michigan and Wisconsin.
It is one of the most celebrated wine-growing addresses in Canada, producing wines of genuine complexity and mineral precision, and it is home to Malivoire Wine Company.

Exceptional & Precise
The Land
What makes the Beamsville Bench exceptional is the combination of geology, topography, and climate working together in an unusually precise way.
Soils here form a heterogeneous mixture of boulders, gravel, sand, silt and clay, along with bits of shale, sandstone and limestone from the continuing erosion of the Niagara Escarpment. Dolomitic limestone is an important component and is thought to have a direct impact on the mineral character found in many Beamsville Bench wines.
The bench itself was created by the receding of the Wisconsin Glacier approximately 12,000 to 25,000 years ago. What the glacier left behind is a landscape uniquely suited to viticulture: slopes that drain naturally, soils that retain just enough moisture during dry summers, and a topography that keeps cold air moving and humidity at bay.

The Climate
Most vineyards sit on north-facing slopes where excellent air drainage serves to extend the growing season. Cold air cannot pool in the vineyard and cause frost, and humidity is swept away by a constant flow of air. The presence of Lake Ontario, just a few miles away, moderates temperature during the long fall. This delays the first autumn frosts and extends hang time, giving grapes the time they need to develop full varietal character while retaining the acidity that defines Beamsville Bench wines.
Sheltered from the stronger prevailing southwesterly winds by the Niagara Escarpment and enjoying lake breezes reflected by the escarpment ridge, the benchland microclimate is well moderated throughout the year.

The Grapes
The Beamsville Bench's cool climate and mineral-rich soils produce wines with a distinctive freshness and precision. The appellation is particularly well suited to:
Gamay — Malivoire's signature variety, producing seven distinct single-vineyard expressions from 23 acres of estate vines
Chardonnay — elegant, mineral-driven whites with genuine ageing potential
Pinot Noir — cool-climate expressions of exceptional finesse
Riesling — together with Chardonnay, the backbone of the Bench, prized for aromatic intensity and the acidity that comes from a long, cool growing season

Malivoire and the Bench
Malivoire Wine Company has farmed the Beamsville Bench since 1995, making us one of the region's longest-standing and most deeply rooted producers. Our commitment to sustainable farming means our vines and this land have grown together over three decades, each vintage a deeper expression of this specific place.
We are proud to share this appellation with exceptional neighbours, wineries whose work has helped establish the Beamsville Bench as one of the world's compelling cool-climate wine addresses. Together, we are defining what this land can produce.
