2023 Small Lot Chardonnay

Grapes were hand-picked from the quarter-century-old vines of our Moira Vineyard site, at average grape sugars near 20.7° Brix.

Hand-sorted grapes were divided, 70% to ferment in a concrete vat and 30% to ferment and age in a neutral oak tank. In both cases, grapes in whole clusters were layered between crushed berries. After pressing, the concrete-fermented wine was portioned to age, 60% in mature oak barrels and 40% in steel tank. After blending, 680 cases were bottled in August 2024.

At the time of bottling, alcohol measured  12%, residual sugar 0.5 grams per litre, titratable acidity 8.1 grams per litre and pH 3.4.

Serve near 10°C with fish tacos with avocado & lime crema, or shrimp tempura.

Ripeness and luxe richness for chardonnay of barrel restraint and therefore a dreamier and fruitier expression. Soft and chock full of citrus flavour though there is just that shortest hit of banana. Finishes at wood induced caramel with a pinch of nutmeg. Drink 2025-2026. Tasted blind at NWACs, June 2025.

Nose a little timid but elegant, fresh and saline Palate following the nose, keeping lean and fresh. Great companion to fresh oysters and raw seafood.
